Suburban Animal Hospital Surgical Capabilities

The surgical suite at Suburban is staffed with great assistants and the best equipment. Kim ( on the right) has been with Suburban for nine years, she has assisted in thousands of surgeries, Claudia ( top of the photo) has been with us for eight years and is always calm even during the most stressful times. A doctor cannot do their best without having the best tools for his or her medical trade. For example, to remove and reconnect a damaged intestine manually the procedure takes more than 45 minutes, using auto sutures the same procedure takes less then 10 minutes. A reduction in the surgical time by at least 35, life saving minutes.

However our investment in technology goes further, not only state of the art but with redundancy. A fantastic piece of equipment will not help your pet if it breaks down. That is why we carry spares. Surgical suction ( we have four), Vital Signs Monitors ( we have five), anesthesia machines ( we have three), IV pumps ( we have 10), oxygen generators ( we have 2 ) plus several tanks of bottle oxygen. All the equipment has battery backup, and we have installed a 50-kW electric generator that activates immediately incase of power failure. No puppy or kitten should be in surgery when the electricity fails.

We would like to point out that not only do we carry a wide array of equipment. We also carry the best. Most animal hospitals utilize small one to three bulbs surgical light with maximum light output of 6,000 foot candles, but our surgical lights (we have two) emit 28,000 foot candles. If you cannot see, then you cannot cut. Our vital sign monitor measures and graphs' oxygen in blood, gives us continual real time Electrocardiograms, give real time blood pressure, correct animal temperature and records breathing patterns. For selected older dogs/ cats, or very young puppies and kittens we have a BIS monitor that measures the effect of anesthesia on brain waves, very useful in fine tuning anesthesia. All our anesthesia machines are positive pressure, meaning that the machine actually inflates the patients lungs, this stops the possibility of CO2 building up in the breathing tube.
